Fishing in Gandia: The Best Areas and Everything You Need to Know

Fishing in Gandía. Horse mackerel caught by an amateur fisherman in Gandía.

If you’re passionate about fishing or just want to try your luck, Gandia and its surrounding areas offer endless opportunities.

From the tranquility of the shore to the vibrant activity of the port, the capital of Safor is a fisherman’s paradise. But where are the best spots and what can you catch?

Prepare your fishing rod, here we go!

The Port Breakwater: the most sought-after area for local fishermen.

The Gandia port breakwater is undoubtedly the most popular and crowded fishing area. Its extensive rock structure is the perfect spot for fishing from the shore, as the currents attract a wide variety of species.

What do you fish? Here you can find species such as sea bream, sea bream, sea bass, sea bream, and sea bass. Activity intensifies at night.

AdvicePlease note that the fishing area may be regulated by the Gandia Fishing Club. Although it is a public space, it is always advisable to be aware of local regulations and respect other anglers.

The Marenys Beach of Rafalcaid

If you prefer the comfort of the sand, the beach is an excellent option.

Beach fishing is known as surfcasting, and is ideal for bottom fishing, especially during off-peak hours.

What do you fish?It is the perfect place to catch sea bream, mullet and, at certain times of the year, the famous tellina (always respecting the regulations).

AdviceThe best times are dawn and dusk. Look for quieter areas of the beach, away from bathers. The area furthest from the port, toward Marenys de Rafalcaid, is often a good option.

Venice Beach (Playa de Venecia)

This is a small beach. You can fish without being interrupted by bathers, as it’s not widely used for that.

Located right between the port and the mouth of the Serpis River.

In the non-summer months, it is very quiet and you can fish from the shore.

We’ve even seen spearfishermen fishing in this area, near the rocks located near the harbor entrance.

Serpis River breakwater

If you like fishing from rocky areas, this is your fishing spot near Gandía and La Safor.

It’s located right between the two previous beaches. It divides Venice Beach (Platja de Venècia) and Marenys Beach in Rafalcaid. It’s a small spot, but you can enjoy various fishing opportunities from this spot.

Just be careful when moving around, as the rocks are uneven and a bit awkward to walk on in some areas.

You can catch species such as sea bream, horse mackerel, sea bass, and others that live in the area.

This is one of our favorite fishing areas. It’s very entertaining, and you can meet other anglers and exchange good catches.

Tips:

Be careful when stepping on rocks and what might fall between them.

Keep in mind that if the wind is strong from the east and the direction is facing you on the breakwater, it will be difficult to cast your fishing line. Especially when the waves are over a meter high, the bouncing of the water makes it a bit uncomfortable.

If you ever go fishing there, I hope you enjoy it.

North Beach of Gandía

We’ve never fished here, nor do we know of anyone who has. Especially because the entire beach is marked with a no-fishing-in-this-area icon.

However, in other areas further north, between the beaches of Xeraco and Gandía, we do know of the practice of surfcasting.

Naturist (nudist) beach

Located between Gandía and Xeraco, this beach has been a popular fishing spot for many fishermen, especially in the months after summer or before the summer months, when there are no swimmers in the area.

It’s very convenient for fishing from the beach. And you can access it very close by car, motorcycle, or bicycle, as there’s a parking area right at the beach entrance.

The Gandia Marsh and the Inland Waters

For lovers of freshwater and calmer fishing, the Marjal de Gandia is a unique ecosystem with diversity fascinating.

Although less common for recreational fishing, it is an option for those seeking a different experience.

What do you fish?: Mainly species such as medium carp and black bass.

ImportantFishing in these areas requires a specific inland fishing license, and it is crucial to inform yourself about protected species and the regulations of the natural park.

San Nicolás River Channel

Canal del Río San Nicolas de Gandía

This river flows into the Port of Gandía. It’s an area of calm waters, and you can fish at various times of the day.

The area is very convenient for children. You can also fish from the bridge near Mercadona del Grao upriver.

You can access this area via several routes from Avenida de Europa.

What bait or lures should you use when fishing in areas near Gandía?

From our experience, you can use many baits and lures to fish in these areas. Although each spot can surprise you.

In the channel of theSan Nicolás Riverand on the beaches near the mouth of the Serpis River, and the Breakwater you can use:

—worms like the Korean red, fly larvae (natural better than artificial),

— pieces of bread dough or bait balls.

These are the best baits, based on our experience in this area.

Don’t Forget Your Fishing License

To legally fish in Gandia, you need a recreational fishing license from the Valencian Community. You can obtain it online through the Valencian Regional Government website or at regional offices. It’s a simple and necessary procedure to avoid fines.

I think that Gandia offers you a wide range of possibilities to enjoy fishing, whether at sea or in inland areas.

Just choose your location and get ready to enjoy a day of relaxation and sports on the Safor coast!
